Hospitals

The sector at a glance

Hospitals and health systems deliver inpatient and acute care — emergency and trauma, surgery, critical care, cardiovascular, oncology, neurosciences, orthopedics, women's and children's services — through licensed facilities staffed around the clock. The sector is layered: multi-hospital systems (investor-owned, Catholic and other nonprofit, academic) own the campuses; a medical staff of employed and independent physicians admits and treats within them; commercial insurers, Medicare and Medicaid set what care is paid for and at what rate; and CMS, The Joint Commission and state agencies license, survey and publicly grade the result. Buyers are not one audience — patients and families choosing an ER or a surgeon, employers and payers negotiating networks, referring physicians directing volume, and the system's own service-line and operations leaders who are measured on length of stay, throughput, readmissions, patient experience scores and margin. What a hospital may say about itself is unusually constrained: quality claims must trace to published CMS or accreditor data, and Stark Law and the Anti-Kickback Statute limit how a hospital may market to, reward or recruit the physicians who send it patients.
